Sleeping problems are a common occurrence for many of us, whether it’s trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, restless nights or waking up feeling tired and unrested. In fact, insomnia and sleeping problems are some of the more common problems we see at our clinic. Acupuncture can be very effective for sleeping problems and without the negative side-effects that are commonly experienced with sleep-aid medications.
Insomnia is one of the most common medical complaints – more than one-third of adults have insomnia at one time or another, while 10-15% suffer from chronic insomnia. With insomnia, a person usually awakes feeling unrefreshed, over-fatigued and has difficulty concentrating during the day. This lack of sleep can have a negative effect on energy levels and moods, as well as health, work performance and quality of life.
Insomnia can have many causes such as stress, anxiety, depression, hormonal changes and menopause, diet and lifestyle habits or work schedules. In Traditional Chinese Medicine we also treat insomnia and sleep issues that are due to problems such as restless legs, disruptive dreams, frequent urination at night or night sweating – all of which can hinder a good night’s sleep.
Acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for resolving sleeping problems, regardless of the cause. Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the underlying cause of insomnia to resolve the problem and prevent sleeping problems from re-occurring in the future.
